Cycling track in Evesham set for approval

A huge new cycling track scheme in Evesham will go before council planners next week.

The plan would see a major cycling facility built at Evesham Football Club off the town’s Cheltenham Road and would include a closed-circuit track and mound-filled pump track for BMX riders as well as routes and trails for learners and cyclists of all abilities.

A decision will be made on the proposal by Wychavon District Council’s planning committee next Thursday (November 11) with council officers recommending the plan is approved.

Training pitches used by the football club would be moved to make way for the new cycling facilities as part of the council’s proposals.

The district council agreed to put aside £1 million last April to build a new state-of-the-art cycling facility at the town’s Valley shopping centre – having previously considered using the football club as a base – but now the council looks to have returned to its original plan.

A statement from the council in the planning report said: “The proposal includes extensive facilities that will be a regional attraction for cycling activities including a 1km off-road circuit, a pump track, all-ability track specifically for disabled users, a learn-to-ride area and cyclocross facilities.

“The proposal has been carefully developed over the last year to address an identified need and directly links to the council’s four-year strategy.

“The project has been widely promoted and received significant local support and enthusiasm, reflected in the numerous positive responses to the planning application.

“In conclusion the facility will provide a unique and valuable asset to Evesham, the district and the wider area.”

Several messages of support were received during public consultation.

One supportive comment submitted to the council said the new cycling venue would be “invaluable” to Evesham and further afield.

“I fully support the plans as I feel it will benefit the local community and extend the cycling community from nearby areas,” it said.

“By hosting events and sessions, we can encourage people of all ages to learn new skills and improve their health and fitness and mental well-being.”

Wychavon District Council’s planning committee meets from 2pm in the Civic Centre in Pershore on Thursday, November 11.
